MA Man Dies In Crash During Snowstorm In Smithfield

Rhode Island State Police said they investigated 54 motor vehicle crashes during the storm and assisted 27 disabled cars.

SMITHFIELD, RI — A Massachusetts man died in a crash on Interstate 295 in Smithfield during Sunday's winter storm, after losing control of his pickup truck and striking a tree, Rhode Island State Police said.

Around 4:20 p.m., State Police and officers and fire officials from Smithfield were called to I-295 southbound, about 500 feet south of the George Washington Highway overpass. Emergency officials found a Ford Ranger pickup truck and learned the driver lost control, traveled through the soft shoulder, entered the woods, and hit a tree.

State Police identified the driver as Anthony Manieri, 56, of North Attleboro. Emergency officials ruled Manieri dead at the scene.
