Smithfield Election Results 2012

This year's local election in Smithfield boasts a number of races - ten candidates running for five posts on the Town Council, four running for two posts on the School Committee, and Republican and Democratic contenders for the contests in House Dist. 44, House Dist. 53 and Senate Dist. 22.

That's a lot to keep track of, but Smithfield Patch will help you stay on top of it throughout the day as we check in at polling places and with candidates.

UPDATE, 8:45 pm, Nov. 7: Town Clerk Dianne Ady informed SmithfieldPatch via email that the eighth precinct was a "limited ballot" voting location at Town Hall, and reported that no ballots or votes were recorded.

The numbers posted on the RI Secretary of State's website have been entered into the tables below.

UPDATE, 10:06 pm: With 7 of 8 precincts reporting, here's how the numbers look:

• Doherty leads Cicilline, 5,253 to 3,336
• Archambault is ahead of Poirier, 5,061 to 3,984
• Costantino has 2,720 to Archer's 1,592
• Town Council tallies have three Republicans and two Democrats leading
• Heenan and Clough top the school board vote
• Smithfield voters support the Twin River expansion bond nearly 3-to-1

UPDATE, 9:18 pm: Still awaiting final numbers from the Secretary of State's office — Archambault won Johnston in the Senate Dist. 22 race and Costantino defeated Archer in Johnston by a nearly 2-to-1 margin.

 

UPDATE, 8:56 pm: With 3 of 8 precincts reporting, Archambault leads Poirier, 1,581 to 1,343, in Senate Dist. 22 race; Costantino leads Poirier; Winfield ahead of Bibeault. Follow the Secretary of State's results website here.

UPDATE, 5:37 pm: Workers at the Smithfield High School and Anna McCabe Elementary School poll locations report strong turnout, with 1,244 votes tallied at the high school just after 5 pm.

Michael Torregrossa, moderator at Smithfield High, called the day's traffic "crazy — really, really busy this morning, especially."

Over at McCabe, moderator Frances Luminello estimated that the voter count was "well over 50 percent" prior to the expected rush later tonight.

"I expect it to pick up after people get out of work, and we've been very steady all day," Luminello explained.

With the anticipated heavy turnout in this election, Luminello said local canvassers have taken steps to assist voters who may bump up against the 8 pm closing time.

"We'll get everybody in the building, and the police officer will be at the end of the line come 8 o'clock, no matter what," Luminello said.
