Another heat wave begins today as hot and humid air returns to Smithfield area and the Southern New England region, according to an advisory released by the Smithfield Emergency Management Agency
The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for Monday from noon until 8 p.m. Hot weather and high humidity values will persist for the remainder of the week with feel-like temperatures reaching into the 100 degree range. Additional heat advisories are expected as the week progresses.
High temps pose a significant threat to the very young, elderly, those with pre-existing medical conditions and persons working outdoors. Stay well hydrated and avoid prolonged exposure to high heat.
The Smithfield Municipal Ice Rink at 101 Pleasant View Ave. has been designated as a cooling center and is available from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m. The EMA Fan Loan Program is activated to assist those in need. To obtain a fan, contact 401 640-2923 for assistance.
Smithfield EMA will be closely monitoring for power outages and will coordinate with National Grid throughout the heat wave.

Thunder storm development will be a possibility for the remainder of the week. Please remain alert for hazardous weather, especially dangerous lightning and flash flooding which can be produced by severe thunderstorms.
