Another Explosive Device Turns Up In Tiverton: Cops

This time, it was a "military projectile," police said.

TIVERTON, RI — An explosive device was located and detonated for the second time in three days in Tiverton, police said.

The most recent explosive device found in Tiverton, later identified as a "military projectile," turned up in the basement of a business on Main Road Friday morning, the Tiverton Police Department said in a media release.

"As a precaution, nearby residents and businesses were safely evacuated, the release said.

The Tiverton police requested the assistance of both the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal's Explosives Operations Division and the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from Newport, according to the release.

"Specialists from the EOD units X-rayed the projectile and conducted further examination but were unable to determine if the item was inert," the release said. "As a precautionary measure, the projectile was safely removed from the business and transported to an off-site location, where it was successfully detonated without further incident."

Two days earlier, a "suspicious explosive device" was found in a Riverside Drive garage, police said.

"Upon arrival, personnel observed the suspected device, later identified as a 3 ¾-inch solid projectile," according to a media release.

"As a precaution, residents in close proximity to the residence were safely evacuated," the release said.

The local departments requested the assistance of the Rhode Island State Fire Marshal's Explosives Operations Division and the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit from Newport, according to the release.

"Specialists from the EOD units conducted an X-ray of the device and determined it to be an armor-piercing shell," the release said. "The item was safely removed from the residence and transported to an off-site location, where it was detonated without further incident."

The two explosive devices discovered in two days are not related, the Tiverton police said.
