Tiverton Casino Vote Expected This Week

Lawmakers are expected to pass legislation setting the stage for Rhode Islander voters to consider a casino referendum this November.

TIVERTON, RI—Rhode Island lawmakers this week are expected to vote on putting a ballot question before voters this fall to approve the construction of a casino near the Massachusetts border in Tiverton.

Hearings are scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday of this week in the House and Senate respectively.

Twin River Management Group wants to build an 85,000 square foot Casino, hotel and entertainment complex utilizing the gaming license that currently authorizes the existence of Newport Grand in Newport.

The company held countless community meetings in Tiverton last year to drum up support and outline their plan, which was based heavily on public input.

If voters approve the measure this fall, Tiverton is poised to get a promised $3 million from the casino each year.

The company said the overall investment into the project will be $75 million, 525 to 600 jobs will be created with the 150 existing Newport Grand employees offered positions.
