Tiverton Man Convicted After Raping 2 Women

Brian Brownell, 58, who is a registered sex offender, raped a woman in May 2006 and another woman in May 2018, state prosecutors proved.

TIVERTON, RI — A Tiverton man was convicted Thursday after raping a woman in 2006 and another woman in 2018, Attorney General Peter Neronha said Monday.

Following a four-day trial, a jury found Brian Brownell, 58, guilty of two counts of first-degree sexual assault.

Brownell, a registered sex offender, will remain held without bail at the Rhode Island Adult Correctional Institutions in Cranston until his sentencing hearing. State prosecutors said the sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.

During the trial, the state proved Brownell raped a woman he knew at a Newport home in May 2006. State prosecutors also proved Brownell raped another woman he knew in May 2018 at a home in Tiverton.

Brownell was convicted of indecent assault and battery on a person under 14 in Massachusetts in 2000 and possession of child pornography in Rhode Island in 2015.
