Watch Out For Phone Scammers Posing As Tiverton Police Officers

The Tiverton Police Department will never call to request payments over the phone, the department said.

TIVERTON, RI — Tiverton police have urged the public to watch out for phone scammer posing as police officers.

Police said the scammer pretending to be officers call victims and tell them they are wanted for a crime and/or owe money. Victims are also told that they will be arrested if they do not send money.

"The caller ID for some of these calls says'Tiverton Police Department,' but has a 216 area code," a Tiverton police spokesperson said. "As a reminder, the Tiverton Police Department will never request payment for fines, traffic tickets, or other criminal matters. All these transactions are conducted by the respective court systems and never over the phone. Electronic payments are also never requested via phone for court matters."
