The Cakery, reopened in July under new ownership, but still within founder Sarah Gauvin's family, is steadily working to spread word to regulars that they're back in action.
"It's a lot of work, but we're trying," said Janelle Gauvin, who, with her husband, Daniel, Sarah's brother, purchased the business over the summer. Sarah, who decided to sell the business to focus on her health during a sudden illness (She is doing much better now, Janelle said), told them the Cakery was going on the market.
Sarah owned the business with her sister Diana and their mom, Michelle. Daniel, Janelle said, didn't want to see the Cakery go, and suggested that they buy it and keep it with the family.
The couple manages the restaurant 9-3 Tuesdays through Sundays, scheduling around Daniel's work with the Woonsocket Highway Department and Janelle's nursing studies at CCRI. Janelle used to work at the CVS Distribution Center in the city, but she also has some experience running a business from when she owned a cleaning service. The two have also brought in a few employees to help staff the eatery.
Janelle said they still serve breakfast and lunch, and the recipes are all the same. "It's scary when people hear, 'new ownership, new management," Janelle said, but save for some new couches and paint, the Cakery is just as its regulars remember it.
