Your Guide: Chan's Hosts Jazz and Blues

The Woonsocket restaurant features two great performances this weekend.

Maintaining its longtime reputation as a great place to hear jazz and blues performances, Chan's hosts two shows this weekend with accordion virtuoso Cory "C Pez" Pesaturo joining the Marco Pignataro World Jazztet on Friday night and blues guitar talent Debbie Davies on Saturday.

Featuring pianist Laszlo Gardony from Germany; Berklee saxophone professor Marco Pignataro from Italy; percussionist Jorge Perez-Albela from Peru, bassist John Lockwood from South Africa, and Rhode Island's own multi-World Champion accordionist Cory Pesaturo, the World Jazztet brings "a strong Mediterranean jazz influence," according to a description on Chan's website. "The combination of soulful and haunting melodies with Mediterranean sounds and modes creates a very original springboard for jazz improvisation and jazz harmonic explorations."

Friday's show starts at 8 p.m. Tickets are $15.

With a style that's been likened to Stevie Ray Vaughn and Eric Clapton, Davies brings a blues voice that "full of propulsion and energy and melodic invention," as described by People Magazine.

Since her start on the West Coast and a gig with Maggie Mayall and the Cadillacs in the '80s, Davies worked her way around the blues world [including a stint with Albert Collins and the Icebreakers that resulted in a Grammy nomination in 1991] and into her own solo career starting with her 1993 debut, Picture This.

She's gone on to record a total of 11 solo and two collaborative albums, and has been working her way back since breaking an arm in 2010.

Blues Review Magazine says: ”She pulls out all the stops. She can play it all: seductive, soulful material, down-home delta blues, or humorous tales of life on the road.”

Next week, Chan's fills its Friday/Saturday Jazz/Blues line-up with Greg Abate and Howard Alden on Aug. 2 and John Primer and the Real Deal Blues Band on Aug. 3.
