June is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

South Carolina is raising awareness of Migraine Disease

June is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month, and the global awareness campaign Shades for Migraine (SFM) is raising awareness and showing the true impact of migraine disease. Migraine is not β€œjust a headache.” It’s a complex neurological disease that impacts nearly every body system. While migraine is common, many feel the need to push through or hide the pain because of stigma.

Shades for Migraine, a program of the non-profit Association of Migraine Disorders, serves as a channel to boost migraine knowledge among the general public. The campaign kickstarts conversations and helps fight migraine stigma by giving people a platform to share their true migraine experience.

β€œMigraine has caused me to miss out on so much; it’s great to have the Shades for Migraine community to remind me I am not alone,” said Lanie Bemis.

"Migraine has deeply affected my daily life β€” disrupting meetings, social events, and family time,” said Jessica Johnson-Jones. β€œIt requires constant flexibility and backup plans. I rely on empathy, support from my husband, understanding friends, and communities like Shades for Migraine to get through it.”

Governor Henry McMaster has declared June Migraine and Headache Awareness Month in South Carolina. Mayor William Cogswell issued a City of Charleston proclamation recognizing it as well.

This year’s Shades for Migraine campaign includes eye-catching billboards across the U.S., inspiring support through the powerful message: β€œShow You Care & Wear A Pair.” Look for billboards locally in the Greenville area.

During the month of June, Shades For Migraine encourages people to post a picture in sunglasses on social media with #ShadesForMigraine to show their support for the millions living with migraine disease.
