Charleston police announced second arrest linked to Dec. 10 Ashley Avenue shooting (abcnews4.com) — Charleston police have made a second arrest in the Dec. 10 Ashley Avenue shooting that left 17-year-old Luis Garcia-Galvez dead in downtown Charleston. Two teens, ages 16 and 17, now face murder, armed robbery, and firearm charges, and investigators are still asking anyone with information to contact detectives or submit an anonymous tip.
   

2. Charleston coalition calls for accountability after 4-year-old's death (live5news.com) — Community leaders in Charleston County are urging residents to share any information with North Charleston Police after 4-year-old Merci Watson was fatally shot while riding in a car on Van Buren Avenue. United Black Men of Charleston County held a press conference near the scene, calling for accountability, more tips to investigators, and a renewed push to confront violence through mentoring, household discipline, and conflict resolution.
   

3. North Charleston mistaken identity slaying ends in prison time (postandcourier.com) — A Charleston County jury has convicted Antonio Bernard Grant of murder and a weapons charge in the 2021 mistaken-identity shooting of 21-year-old Markell Maxwell on Parana Street in North Charleston. Grant received a 55-year prison sentence after surveillance video, texts to a spiritual advisor, and testimony about his attempts to hide from police helped secure the verdict.
   

4. Barry Manilow's January Charleston show rescheduled due to lung cancer diagnosis (postandcourier.com) — Barry Manilow’s farewell tour stop at North Charleston Coliseum, originally set for Jan. 14, has been postponed to March 11 after he was diagnosed with Stage 1 lung cancer and scheduled for surgery. Tickets already purchased will be honored on the new date, and additional seats remain available, while doctors expect a good prognosis and about a month of recovery time.
   

5. Mental health advocates call for bridge barriers, 988 signs to prevent suicides (abcnews4.com) — North Charleston officials and mental health advocates are pushing for more bridge barriers and 988 crisis hotline signs after a week of violence and a major overpass shutdown, highlighting one recent police intervention that saved a life. They point to new jump guards on local interchanges and rising 988 call volumes as evidence that physical safeguards and visible help can prevent suicides and support struggling residents.
