Presidential Hopefuls Criticize Lawsuit Filed Against S.C.'s Immigration Law

The Associated Press reported that on Tuesday presidential hopefuls criticized the U.S. Justice Department's lawsuit against a new illegal immigration law in South Carolina.

According to the article, Texas Gov. Rick Perry and Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachman said federal officials aren't enforcing immigration laws adequately and states need to act.

Republican Gov. Nikki Haley, who is named as a defendant in the lawsuit, signed the illegal immigration legislation into law in June. The state is expected to begin enforcing the law on Jan. 1.

A preliminary injunction is set to be heard before Judge Richard M. Gergel at 10 a.m. Dec. 19 in Charleston Courtroom 3 at the U.S. Court House, 81 Meeting St., Charleston.

In October, the ACLU filed a similar lawsuit against the state.
