IAAM launches 'The Renewal Series' with events in the New Year (abcnews4.com) — Charleston residents can ring in the New Year with the International African American Museum’s new “Renewal Series,” a slate of free and community-focused events downtown. From a Watch Night-inspired service and Emancipation Day celebration to an MLK Day partnership with YWCA Greater Charleston, the programs center on reflection, justice, and shared cultural traditions.
   

2. 'Big surge' in flu cases hits South Carolina, Charleston with new strain (postandcourier.com) — Charleston-area hospitals, including MUSC and Roper St. Francis, are seeing a sharp spike in flu-like illnesses driven by a new influenza A H3N2 variant that’s poorly matched to this year’s shot. Doctors say ERs are extremely busy but emphasize vaccination still helps prevent severe disease and hospitalizations, especially as holiday gatherings fuel virus spread across the Lowcountry and the rest of South Carolina.
   

3. Ex-cadet claims North Charleston police ignored harassment, later rehired accused (abcnews4.com) — A former North Charleston police cadet says her sexual harassment complaints were brushed aside and that she was later fired, only to see the fellow trainee she accused rehired. Community advocates now say the mayor acknowledged departmental mistakes, while police insist they follow established procedures but won’t discuss specific personnel decisions.
   

4. North Charleston man accused of attacking pregnant mother of his unborn child (live5news.com) — Police in North Charleston say they’ve arrested a 22-year-old man accused of severely beating a pregnant woman who identified him as the father of her unborn child. North Charleston and Charleston officers located the suspect on Maybank Highway, recovered a gun, and booked him into the Al Cannon Detention Center on domestic violence and firearm charges.
   

5. Man allegedly living illegally in North Charleston after 2022 deportation back in custody (postandcourier.com) — Federal agents say a man previously deported in 2022 was arrested in North Charleston after an ICE operation and now faces a federal assault charge, to which he’s pleaded not guilty. Authorities allege he tried to flee along Dorchester Road, struck law enforcement vehicles, and forced officers to jump out of the way before being taken into custody.
