The National Weather Service in Columbia has placed the entire central Midlands under a Winter Weather Advisory from Friday, January 21 through Saturday, January 22.

An approaching storm is expected to bring heavy mixed precipitation beginning late Thursday January 20 and extending through the day on Friday and into Saturday. These conditions combined with dropping temperatures could bring freezing rain, ice and even snow to the Columbia metro area.

According to the NWS freezing rain is expected to be the main precipitation type and slippery and hazardous road conditions, power outages and property damages due to downed trees will all be possible with this weather event.

The Columbia-Richland Fire Department encourages our citizens to use utmost caution on the roadways this Friday and into the weekend and to postpone any unnecessary travel if dangerous conditions exist due to the weather. Also given the threat of power outages be sure you have an emergency kit ready for your home. This kit should include a flashlight and spare batteries.
