Spivey Hall Children's Choir to Tour Columbia and Lowcountry

Acclaimed group from Atlanta area sets June dates in South Carolina.

From Spivey Hall Children's Choir:

The Spivey Hall Children’s Choir will be performing concerts in Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina during its 2013 Summer Tour. In Columbia, Dr. Martha Shaw will conduct the internationally recognized choral group in a joint workshop/performance with The Young Sandlapper Singers at St. Michael and All the Angels Episcopal Church. In Charleston, the singers will perform at four senior community centers, as well as during the prestigious Spoleto USA festival as part of the Piccolo Spoleto program.

The Spivey Hall Children’s Choir’s June appearances in South Carolina are part of its “Give Back” program. During these regional tours, which occur every three years, the choir typically performs at assisted living centers, retirement villages, schools, shelters and churches in an effort to bring its music to those who can most benefit from it. The group also uses these concerts as a platform to assist local charitable organizations.

The performances at the assisted living and retirement centers will begin with a few pieces from the group’s repertoire of world music, including “El Pambiche,” by Dominican Republic composer Juan-Tony Guzman, and “Mbiri Kuna Mwari,” by Lee Kesselman, from Zimbabwe. The group then moves into the audience, where the students join the residents in a sing-along of familiar favorites. The concert then wraps with classic pieces, such as Jerome Kern’s “The Way You Look Tonight,” and a medley of Johnny Mercer songs arranged by Randall Reese.

The Piccolo Spoleto performance will showcase the choir’s wide range with a diverse mixture of classical children’s choir repertoire and world music selections. The program will include many of the selections performed in the assisted living and retirement concerts with  traditional regional favorites such as “Carolina in the Morning;” rousing spirituals, including ”Music Down in My Soul,” by Moses Hogan; and moving campfire songs like “No Time,” by Susan Brumfield.
