Great things happen when a group of people are passionate enough about a problem to find a solution. In 2003, concerned citizens set out to inform the community about the cycle of domestic violence and its effects on every family member. They recognized the need for a solution and collaborated to build a 7,000-square-foot emergency shelter, MARYS House (Ministry Alliance for Regaining Your Safety).
Because of the generosity of the community, the shelter was built debt-free and opened October 2008 as the only faith based nonprofit domestic violence shelter in the state of South Carolina. Our unique setup allows us flexibility in the way we meet clients’ needs. Public funding does not allow teenage boys to reside in domestic violence shelters. Because we are privately funded, we house clients in family suites, eliminating the need for further separation.
As we celebrate our fifth birthday, there is so much to be grateful for. In addition to a comfortable and safe emergency shelter, we have a dedicated, loving, compassionate staff who are trained in assessing clients and helping them transition to an independent life free of abuse. MARYS House staff and volunteers assist and encourage clients. Since opening 5 years ago, more than 500 lives have been transformed!
An increased demand for our shelter and services requires more community support than ever before. South Carolina is now ranked 2nd in the nation for the number of deaths due to domestic violence. The number of phone calls we receive on our emergency line has doubled. As we look towards the future, our primary goal is to acquire enough regular contributors to ensure our financial needs are consistently met.
