📰 News we're reading

1. 2025 Rewind: Conservation and outdoors (greenvillejournal.com) — Conservation groups helped permanently protect hundreds of acres in northern Greenville County in 2025, including land near Marietta and additional properties in Greenville County later in the year. These gains came amid major setbacks from Hurricane Helene recovery and record-setting wildfires, while the Upstate also mourned the loss of noted naturalist and historian Dennis Chastain.

2. Upstate woman charged with unlicensed nursing, stealing meds (wspa.com) — A Piedmont woman has been charged after state investigators say she worked as a nursing director at Cherrydale Post Acute in Greenville despite a suspended license and is accused of stealing a patient’s oxycodone. She was arrested and booked into the Greenville County Detention Center and now faces two misdemeanor counts of unlicensed nursing practice and a felony controlled-substance theft charge, which the Attorney General’s Office will prosecute.

3. Are Christmas lights on cars legal in SC? (wspa.com) — Thinking about putting Christmas lights on your car around Greenville? State troopers say it’s legal in South Carolina as long as the lights aren’t red or blue, don’t flash, and don’t block your tag, headlights, or turn signals. Local drivers are embracing the trend, but Highway Patrol urges everyone to enjoy the decorations without getting distracted in holiday traffic.

4. Home at Last: Honoring the Return of a Flying Tiger (beforeitsnews.com) — Greenville residents recently gathered at a local cemetery as the long-empty headstone of World War II fighter pilot and Greenville native 1st Lt. Morton Sher was finally matched with his newly identified remains. After decades of uncertainty and international recovery efforts, his family and military honor guard marked an emotional homecoming that connects Greenville’s past to today’s service members’ ongoing commitment to bring the fallen home.

5. WATCH: SCDNR releases dash cam footage of suspect in red suit seen with deer (wbtv.com) — SCDNR officers in Greenville, S.C., say their dash cam picked up a playful “suspect” in a red suit traveling with several deer after responding to a Christmas Eve trespassing call. Tracks in the snow, jingle bells, and a brief sighting suggest a tongue‑in‑cheek nod to Santa’s overnight visit around Greenville.
