The future of Hilton Head is looking bright, thanks to the incredible young people working to strengthen our community. In partnership with T-Mobile, Patch is proud to spotlight future leaders like Garrett Simons, who are making a positive impact in and around Hilton Head.

Garrett, a recent graduate of Hilton Head Island High School, earned the 2023 R.D. Bennett Community Service Scholarship for his inspiring project, “Making Birthdays Bright.” Awarded by The Electric Cooperatives of South Carolina, the $5,000 scholarship recognizes students whose projects exemplify the cooperative principle of “concern for community.” Garrett’s initiative provided over 180 birthday boxes, containing cake supplies and decorations, to 11 local food banks. Partnering with Pockets Full of Sunshine, a nonprofit supporting adults with special needs, Garrett’s efforts brought joy to families facing food insecurity by helping them celebrate special occasions they otherwise couldn’t afford.

Garrett’s commitment to community service was also highlighted during his participation in the Washington Youth Tour, a summer program for rising seniors that sends students to Washington, D.C., to learn about leadership and civic engagement. He is currently continuing his education and community service while studying at Duke University, with eventual plans to run for political office.
