1. Beaufort's balloon release ban is SC's first. Meet the Harbor Island woman behind it (islandpacket.com) — Beaufort has just become the first city in South Carolina to outlaw outdoor balloon releases, and advocates now want Hilton Head Island and other coastal towns to adopt similar rules to protect marine wildlife and tourism. A Harbor Island naturalist led the push, citing data showing Beaufort County has the state’s worst balloon litter, much of it on beaches including Hilton Head’s.
   

2. Jasper and Beaufort Counties open cold weather shelters ahead of freeze (wtoc.com) — If you or someone you know on Hilton Head Island needs a warm place tonight, Christ Lutheran Church on William Hilton Parkway is opening as a cold-weather shelter. Officials across Jasper and Beaufort counties are activating multiple overnight warming sites as temperatures drop below freezing, urging residents to protect themselves and vulnerable neighbors from the dangerous cold.
   

3. Life on the Sea Islands: Beaches, boating and potential real estate bargains in Beaufort County (postandcourier.com) — Home shoppers on Hilton Head Island may be surprised how much farther their money can stretch just across Port Royal Sound on Beaufort’s Sea Islands, where waterfront and beach homes are far cheaper. The story walks through prices, lifestyle, and protections on Lady’s, St. Helena, Harbor and Fripp islands, explaining why some buyers priced out of Hilton Head are heading north instead.
   

4. Northwestern's Tamarion Watkins named SC Mr. Football for 2025 season (thestate.com) — Hilton Head Island gets a shout-out in the history of South Carolina’s top high school football honor, with former Seahawk linebacker Jaylen Sneed listed among past Mr. Football winners. This year’s award went to Northwestern safety Tamarion Watkins, who helped lead his team to a second straight state championship and earned Texas A&M’s attention.
