- The 93-year-old Hilton Head Island homeowner who sued developers over her family's land is also being sued by the company that plans to build 147 three-story townhomes in her neighborhood. Construction began close to Josephine Wright's home Thursday, though she never had any face-to-face interaction with the company. However, Hilton Head is pausing all construction and permit issuance until the lawsuits are concluded. (ABC News 4)
- After Idalia passed over Hilton Head, local reporters rode alongside the Sea Turtle Patrol to assess the storm's impact on the turtles' nests. The Sea Turtle Patrol explained that it was too late to move nests this season, and it seemed that the tide was a little worse than earlier in the week. Sadly, two nests were lost due to the storm, and 12 were overwashed but will likely make it. To date, only a third of the nests have yet to hatch so far this year. (WTOC)
- The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) has reopened the shellfish harvesting beds that were closed due to Hurricane Idalia. Mike Marshall, manager of DHEC's shellfish sanitation section, explained that the areas most impacted by the hurricane had not exceeded rainfall closure limits and the hurricane warnings had expired. The beds from Hilton Head Island in Beaufort County to Edisto Island in Charleston have reopened. (scdhec.gov)
