Gilbert Man Hit by Vehicle at VA Hospital Dies

A Gilbert man died Tuesday morning after he was hit by a vehicle in the parking lot of the Veterans Administration Hospital in Columbia, according to the Richland County Coroner's office.

Duane Mack, 85, was leaving the hospital around 9:49 a.m. when the driver of a vehicle ran into him, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said. The driver drove forward onto the sidewalk instead of backing up.  

Mack was taken to Palmetto Richland Memorial where he was pronounced dead at 10:44 a.m., Watts said. Mack died from injuries sustained when he was hit by the vehicle.

The Columbia Police Department is investigating the incident.
