Lexington Attorney Indicted on Extortion, Fraud Asks for Lower Bond

A Lexington lawyer who was indicted on extortion and fraud chargesΒ WednesdayΒ is asking for a lower bond, according to a report from WIS.Β 

Richard J. Breibart's public defender asked a judge to reduce Breibart's $100,000 bond, according to a tweet from WIS reporter Jack Kuenzie.

Federal marshals took Breibart into custody WednesdayΒ after he was unable to pay the $100,000 bond,Β according to a report from The State. He spent the night in jail.Β

According to the Associated Press, Breibart took more than $1 million from clients after threatening them with made-up charges.

A federal grand jury in Columbia returned a 10-count indictment against Breibart Wednesday that includes charges of extortion under the Hobbs Act, mail fraud and wire fraud.Β

Breibart faces a maximum of 20 years imprisonment on each count.Β
