Police Investigating Gilbert Man's Death
An 85-year-old man died after he was hit by a truck at the VA Hospital in Columbia Tuesday.

Columbia Police are investigating after a Gilbert man was hit and killed by a truck Tuesday at the Wm. Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Administration Medical Center in Columbia.Β
No charges have been filed, Columbia Police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons said.Β
Duane Mack, 85, was leaving the hospital with a relative just before 10 a.m. when he was hit, Timmons said. The two were walking on the sidewalk.

An elderly man who was trying to park his truck in a handicap parking space somehow accelerated, jumped the curb, ran onto the sidewalk and hit Mack before running into the building, Timmons said.
Mack died around 10:45 a.m. at Palmetto Richland Memorial from injuries sustained when he was hit by the truck, according to Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

The driver of the truck and his passenger didn't suffer any serious injuries, Timmons said. Mack's relative didn't suffer serious injuries either.
