Sheriff's Department to Host Safety Awareness Program

Lexington County residents can learn how to defend and protect themselves during a safety awareness class at the sheriff's department next month. 

Sgt. Diane Paavel, a crime prevention officer with the Lexington County Sheriff's Department, will teach citizens how to defend themselves, how to escape in case of an attack and how to use pepper spray.

Citizens will also learn to be aware of their surroundings at home, work and inside their vehicles.

“Our goal is to help citizens be smart, be ready and be alert,” Sheriff James Metts said.

The cost for the Citizen Safety Awareness Program is $25, which includes a safety awareness kit with a can of pepper spray.

The sheriff's department is partnering with SABRE, a company that manufactures a pepper spray. 

The class will last from 6 to 10 p.m. on Oct. 4. To register for the class, call the sheriff's department front desk at 803-785-2400. The $25 will be due at the time of the class.

Participants must be at least 16 years old. The program is limited to 40 participants. Lexington County residents are given preference.
