Speak Out: Should Schools Issue iPads to Students?

It's been about a year since Lexington One issued an iPad to every high school student in the district. This school year, the district did the same for middle school students.

But parents and community members are still unsure about the effectiveness of the devices in advancing students' learning.Β 

During a forum on Oct. 11, several Lexington One school board candidates expressed concern that the iPads are a distraction to students.Β

Others said that the iPads could be used effectively as learning tools, but that teachers need more training on how to incorporate them into lessons.Β 

But district officials who are in favor of the iPads say that they "level the playing field" and open the world to students who may not be able to afford that type of technology otherwise.Β
