West Columbia Siblings Make National Junior Karate Team

James Sorrells and Tamayah Sorrells made the team after competing at the USA Karate Nationals earlier in July.

A brother and sister from West Columbia earned spots on the U.S. National Junior Karate Team after winning medals in the USA Karate Nationals earlier this month, according to reports.

James Sorrells and Tamayah Sorrells won bronze medals in the 18-20 age Elite Kumite (sparring) class at the nationals held in Florida, according to a report from WACH Fox. 

The two traveled to Florida with other members of the Columbia School of Karatedo to compete, according to the report. James and Tamayah's mother, Pam Sorrells, owns the West Columbia karate studio.

"I am honored to be on the junior national team," Tamayah told WACH Fox.  "We still have a lot of work to do though. The main thing is not so much that we made the team, but how much more work we have to do to get better next year."

Four other students at the studio won medals at the nationals, according to a report from WLTX.

The Columbia School of Karatedo opened in 1979 and has been under the leadership of Pam Sorrells since February 2011.
