Why Did Lexington Chick-fil-A Close Early?

The Chick-fil-A in Lexington shut its doors three hours early Wednesday after running out of food.

Hundreds of people flocked to the restaurant to support the company's stance against same-sex marriage after supporters of the restuarant dubbed Wednesday "Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day."

The fast food chain has been at the center of controversy since Chick fil-A President and COO Dan Cathy endorsed the "biblical definition of the family unit" in an interview with the Baptist Press on July 16. 

An employee said the store closed around 7 p.m. The store asked the Lexington Police Department to close off the parking lot, said Lt. Wally Bledsoe. 

At 8 p.m., customers were still pulling into the Wal-mart parking lot wondering why the Chick-fil-A driveway was blocked.

At lunch time, customers were waiting in a line that stretched outside the doors of the Lexington location. Around 3 p.m., the drive thru line was still wrapped around the building. 

A Lexington police officer was stationed at the restaurant  to direct traffic during the day. 

For weeks, people have been stating their opinions in favor of or against Cathy. . 

for the restaurant Wednesday.
