Columnist: 'Nanny Stater' Councilman Still Conservative
Dorchester County Councilman Larry Hargett takes a lot of heat for proposed ordinances, including a failed noise ordinance, and a failed ordinance regulating where one can fire a weapon.

Brian Hicks wrote a column this weekend that said that while some might call Dorchester County Councilman Larry Hargett a "Nanny Stater," he's still a true conservative and he "represents the silent majority."
Hargett's most recent proposal seeks to limit the number of dogs that can live on a residential lot in the county. Hargett proposed some of the most contentious — and failed — ordinances on council in the last year. Those ordinances include an ordinance to prevent the firing of weapons near high-residential areas, and an ordinance limiting noise.Â

Hargett is far from a Big Government guy — he’s a conservative Republican in a county full of them. But he realizes something that a lot of other people don’t, or choose to ignore.
And that is, your rights end when they intrude on someone else’s.
