Maple Street widening project nears completion (postandcourier.com) — Drivers in Summerville should expect ongoing work as the Maple Street Widening Project enters its final phase, with paving largely done and signal installations underway at Highway 78 and North Maple. Remaining tasks include concrete medians, driveway tie-ins, and final striping, and residents can still share concerns or questions with the town by phone or online feedback form.
   

2. Berkeley Co. deputies charge woman whose parents accuse of abusing their toddler (live5news.com) — Parents of a 3-year-old nonverbal autistic girl say classroom video from Archway Academy in Summerville shows a staff member forcefully handling and hitting their child earlier this month. Berkeley County authorities have charged the worker with placing a child at unlawful risk or harm, and a judge has set bond while the case moves toward a February court date.
   

3. Free car seat inspections newly available at Lowcountry fire stations (live5news.com) — Summerville and other Lowcountry fire and EMS crews have just completed specialized training so they can offer free car seat safety inspections at local fire stations starting next week. Parents can already get quick checks at the Dorchester County Council building and will soon have ongoing access to trained technicians to help ensure children are properly secured.

Basketball Recap: Westwood's Win on Tuesday Extends Winning Streak to Four (maxpreps.com) — Summerville High’s girls basketball team took a tough 53-32 home loss to Westwood on Tuesday, continuing a rough stretch that’s seen the Green Wave drop three of their last four. Now 4-3, Summerville looks to rebound in a holiday matchup against Lucy Beckham on Thursday evening.
   

5. S.C. prison officer charged with providing contraband to prisoners, misconduct (live5news.com) — A Summerville resident who worked as a corrections officer at Lieber Correctional Institution in Dorchester County has been fired and charged in a contraband scheme, along with a woman from Sumter. State corrections officials say the pair allegedly conspired with an inmate to bring prohibited items into the prison earlier this year in exchange for cash.
