Groups Raising Cash for Tourist-Stopping Banners

The 2013 Leadership Dorchester Class of the Greater Summerville/Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce is reaching out to the community, asking for donations toward a $10,000 goal of siphoning some of the billions of dollars that pass by Summerville en route to Charleston every year.

The organizations want banners to announce the Birthplace of Sweet Tea to would-be passersby.

The campaign was launched last Monday and will continue until Friday, Nov. 1. As of Sunday night, two backers of donated $200 of the $10,000 goal, according to FundingCharleston.com.

According to the group, a 2010 study done by Arnett Muldrow & Associates showed that strategically placed banners from I-26 to Historic Summerville would be needed in order to lead tourists deeper into the community and help them discover the richness that lies within.
