Substitute Teacher Accused of Sex with Student

Dorchester County deputies say William Jesse Baber of North Charleston engaged in a four-month sexual relationship with 17-year-old Ashley Ridge student.

Dorchester County Sheriff's Office has brought charges against a Dorchester County School District Two substitute teacher, alleging a four-month sexual affair with a 17-year-old Ashley Ridge High student.

William Jesse Baber II, 22, of North Charleston was arrested Wednesday night and charged with sexual battery of a 16 or 17 year old student with no aggravated force or coercion.

According to the incident report, the victim had said she did not want to have sex with the teacher on Wednesday but he had sex with her anyway. Dorchester County Sheriff's Office documents say Baber and the student had begun a relationship in December 2012.

Dorchester Two spokeswoman Pat Raynor says Baber no longer works for the district as of Wednesday. He began subbing in the district in November 2012. There was no evidence of sexual activity at Ashley Ridge High but the teacher did meet the victim while substituting in her class, according to Raynor.

Raynor says all substitute teachers must pass a background check to screen for sexual predators and more.
