Town Steps Closer to Increasing Mayor's Pay

Attorney will draft an ordinance to increase mayoral salary by 30 percent.

Summerville Mayor Bill Collins has been acting town administrator for nearly two years, and now he might begin to draw a salary to reflect his extra duties.

Town Council voted Monday to authorize the town attorney to draft an ordinance that would increase Collins' pay from $15,000 to $45,000, the Post and Courier reported.

If the town hired a full-time administrator, it would be an additional $165,000 with salary and benefits.

An increase to a public employee's salary cannot be enacted until after an election cycle after they've entered office. Collins could not receive a change in salary until November 2013. If the ordinance passes, he will start earning the additional income January 2014.
