📰 News we're reading

1. Progress continues despite winter strain at Bishop Dudley House (dakotanewsnow.com) — Bishop Dudley House in downtown Sioux Falls is over capacity nearly every night and facing longer outdoor wait times after its weapons detection system was destroyed. Staff are urgently asking locals for hand warmers, gloves, Kleenex, cough drops, desserts for Christmas Day, and basic supplies like tables, bins, and security wands. Despite the strain, many guests, including employed residents, are using the shelter to move toward stability.

2. City: 120k visitors to Winter Wonderland, Jacobson Plaza (keloland.com) — More than 120,000 people have already visited Winter Wonderland at Falls Park and the new Jacobson Plaza in downtown Sioux Falls, creating noticeable traffic backups on Phillips Avenue. City parks staff recommend enjoying the lights on foot, using nearby overflow parking by the farmers market and north of Falls Park. The surge in visitors is also boosting nearby businesses like Severance Brewing and The Lodge.

3. SD economic development chair has multiple ties to food company receiving millions in state aid (siouxfallslive.com) — State officials are scrutinizing ties between South Dakota’s economic development board chair and CJ Schwan’s as the company builds a massive, state-supported food plant in northern Sioux Falls. Lawmakers from Sioux Falls and beyond are now pushing for tougher disclosure rules and longer cooling-off periods for state officials involved in big subsidy deals.

4. AAA: 388,000+ South Dakotans to travel for holidays (keloland.com) — Sioux Falls residents are part of more than 388,000 South Dakotans expected to travel at least 50 miles over Christmas and New Year’s, with AAA urging drivers to hit the road earlier in the day to avoid congestion. A brief note also mentions a plea deal in a Sioux Falls day care abuse case, while national travel is projected to hit record levels.
