Here are the top three stories in Chattanooga today:
- Jamal Adams, 31, of Chattanooga, has been charged with first-degree murder. According to court filings, Adams is suspected of killing Matthew Overby on Feb. 1. Adams allegedly spoke to Overby while he sat in his car off Rossville Boulevard and then shot him. The two had a history as Adams was charged with aggravated assault in October 2022 after stabbing Overby in East Ridge. (Subscription: Chattanooga Times Free Press)
- An autopsy report revealed Damean Alexander Jones, 26, of Chattanooga, was shot by Hamilton County Sheriff's deputies 12 times. The autopsy report released Wednesday of the Dec. 29, 2022 shooting also revealed Jones had methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death. Jones had led officers on a car chase while driving a stolen vehicle and eventually began shooting, resulting in his death. (Subscription: Chattanooga Times Free Press)
- Chattanooga firefighters are working to find a solution to occupational cancer from PFAS –or "forever chemicals." Chattanooga senior firefighter Chad Crisp passed away in August 2020 due to occupational cancer from forever chemicals from his uniform. Jack Thompson, president of the Chattanooga Fire Fighters Association, said, "You can find PFAS everywhere, but the thing about it is for us, it’s in our suits and completely encapsulate us." A National Association of Firefighters was recognized by the city council on Jan. 31, and they are working in conjunction with the International Association of Fire Fighters to change regulatory standards, demand PFAS-free gear, and more.
