Memphis Songwriters Series Hosted by Mark Edgar Stuart (wearememphis.com) — Memphis music lovers can catch a $10 songwriter showcase at the Halloran Centre on January 15, featuring intimate performances and stories from top local artists. Host Mark Edgar Stuart will spotlight blues talents Doug MacLeod, Jad Tariq, and Singa B, all rooted in the city’s rich musical tradition. Tickets are available now for the 7 p.m. show downtown.
   

2. Tennessee to launch first-in-nation domestic violence offender registry on January 1 (actionnews5.com) — Memphis residents will soon have access to a first-in-the-nation online registry listing repeat domestic violence offenders convicted after January 1, 2026. Advocates at YWCA Greater Memphis say the new Tennessee database could be a crucial safety tool in a city that consistently ranks among the nation’s highest for domestic violence, helping people screen potential partners and stay informed.
   

3. TVA moves forward with plan for gas turbines in Boxtown (wreg.com) — TVA is moving ahead with six new gas turbines near the old Allen Fossil Plant in Boxtown, promising power for about 117,000 homes and 200 construction jobs. Neighbors in Southwest Memphis worry about health and air quality as TVA’s own review estimates more than 401,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually. Construction could start soon, with turbines running in just over a year.
   

4. Daily Jigsaw: A place of grace (dailymemphian.com) — A long-vacant 10-unit building in North Memphis’ Bickford area has been transformed into the renovated Place of Grace apartments, part of a broader push to restore affordable housing. City leaders recently held a ribbon-cutting, and readers can explore the project through an online jigsaw puzzle game featuring the building’s photo.
   

5. New book looks at civil rights icon James Lawson Jr.'s Memphis legacy (commercialappeal.com) — A new book is shining a fresh light on Rev. James Lawson Jr.’s pivotal role in Memphis’ civil rights history, from the sanitation workers’ strike to the I AM A MAN memorial. Co-written with Midtown author Emily Yellin, the memoir will launch Feb. 20 at the National Civil Rights Museum and promises candid stories about Memphis leaders and struggles that still echo locally today.
