Talking to Kids about Character

Here we are mid August and the kids are back in school. Lots of adjustments go on as the summer comes to a close, schedules change and new days, new beginnings, new trials and new errors are bound to occur. How are you teaching your children about coping skills? How are you teaching your children about good character? How are you teaching your children about having confidence, to persevere, to be a friend, to be kind, to be respectful, to behave, to have healthy habits, to use their good manners and to be kind? This latest blog post may be helpful.

This past week I was contacted by a few moms who were concerned because their child was being bullied. Now, I am no expert, but one thing I do know is that when we talk to our children about what it means to be kind, not be a bully and what to do if they are bullied is important. It's a new world out there, however, having good character never, never, never goes out of style. A conversation should be had with your children to help them understand the importance of being kind, caring and the other values that will empower them through their entire life. I have written a blog post to help with transitioning back to school which may be helpful to you. There is another blog on the power of friendship. Our Travel Pal blog is a fun way to introduce your children to the characters and have a visual reminder to be of good character!

We have books to help support your teaching these traits to your children if you want to read stories to them and have talks about what the trait means. Our newsletter offers plenty of suggestions and freebees to help you teach these important character traits to your children, too. Visit our website. If there is a specific trait you're working on, look under the team tab and meet all nine of the Characters of Character, they can't wait to meet you!

My heart is for all our children to develop these strong civic values, however, teaching them in low income communities has significant benefits. When we enhance a students strengths this can lead to improved behaviors and academic gains. Our organization has put together a package of character building activities, resources and tools to donate to a low in come After School Program in Robertson County and you can make a difference with your support. Hopefully we are able to do this amongst many schools with the support of community.

Did you know that we also donate Superhero Character Building activity boxes to Children's Hospitals? We do! Since Covid we had to rethink just how we would continue to provide these messages to our children and youth because actual classes were not available. And we did, with these boxes we have engaged thousands of children in engaging activities helping to redirect their anxiety or pain while in the hospital. You can learn more here if you wish to support or sponsor them.
