Creeks Rise, Roads Close After Midstate's Weekend Washout

Middle Tennessee waterways came close to flood stage Saturday and Sunday and police closed low-lying roads throughout the area.

NASHVILLE, TN -- Record-setting rainfall pushed Middle Tennessee creeks to their limits Saturday and Sunday, forcing road closures across the area.

The National Weather Service reported 2.69 inches of rain fell Saturday at Nashville International Airport, blowing past the previous record for February 10 of 1.08 inches in 1913. That push of precipitation sent rivers and creeks surging and resulted in flood advisories across the region.

Law enforcement throughout the Nashville area closed roads as nearby creeks threatened to inundate them and sent repeated warnings to motorists -- sometimes ignored -- to avoid driving around barricades or on to flooded streets.

Many rivers and creeks rose to near-action or flood levels early Sunday and then began to fall, but another wave of rain Sunday afternoon sent them rising again.
