Las Vegas Shooting: Victim Dies In Nashville Man's Arms

Derrell Vaughn is back home after trying to save a shooting victim in the minutes after the Las Vegas tragedy.

NASHVILLE, TN — A Nashville man returned home Monday after witnessing the harrowing scene at Las Vegas' Route 91 Harvest Festival and trying to save one of the victims of the tragedy.

Derrell Vaughn was in the crowd of thousands Sunday night, watching Jason Aldean perform the final show of the weekend country music festival, when 64-year-old Stephen Paddock began firing from a 32nd-story window at the adjacent Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

Vaughn told WSMV that he saw a man in his twenties unconscious and bleeding being pushed by others in a wheelbarrow and he told them to stop and lay him down so he could perform CPR.

“We did some more compressions, we kept trying to work on him, seven or eight of us doing a rotation, doing our best to save his life, but unfortunately it didn’t happen,” Vaughn told the station. “I feel so bad for him and his family.”

Vaughn posted about the experience on Facebook.

Vaughn did not — and may never — know the man he tried to save.

“I was just doing everything in my power to make sure the man went home to his family,” Vaughn told WSMV.

Las Vegas officials said 59 people died in the attack, including Sonny Melton, a nurse from Big Sandy, Tennessee. More than 500 were injured, including Jason McMillan, also from Big Sandy.
