The event is held each year on the federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King.

The law firm’s website says that the event “celebrates Dr. King’s legacy through the opportunity to engage with each other and recall and continue his work towards his global vision, Beloved Community. This concept is where human decency will not allow poverty, hunger, and homelessness, where the spirit of sisterhood and brotherhood replaces discrimination, and where bigotry, racism, peace, and justice prevail over war and conflict.”

The first MLK breakfast was organized in the Nashville office of the firm, then Bone McAllester Norton, by a handful of attorneys and staff members in 2001. Up to 1,000 people attend the breakfast, which has featured speakers including former United Nations Ambassador Andrew Young, the late Rev. C.T. Vivian, and the late Freedom Rider Ernest “Rip” Patton.

Booker, formerly mayor of Newark, New Jersey, was elected to the Senate in 2012 and ran for the Democratic nomination for President in 2020.
