Rutherford Unemployment Rate Climbs, Still Among State's Lowest

Unemployment jumped a half-percent across Rutherford County in January, but remains among the state's lowest.

NASHVILLE, TN — Rutherford County's unemployment climbed 0.5 percent in January to 2.8 percent, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor & Workforce Development, the fourth-lowest rate in the state.

The unemployment rate rose in all 95 counties, as is typical for January county-level rates.

Of the ten lowest county-level figures statewide, nine were in Middle Tennessee. Only Williamson (2.5 percent), Davidson and Cheatham (both 2.7 percent) had lower jobless rates than Rutherford County.

In Smyrna, the city-level unemployment rate is estimated at 2.8 percent and in La Vergne, it is at 2.9 percent. Both are 0.5 percent increases over December.

Rutherford County's unemployment rate has dropped 0.9 percent since January 2017.

The state rate, reported last week, is 3.3 percent, unchanged from December's adjusted figure.
