Former Vandy Running Back Says His Dog Made Him Do It, But It Could Have Been The Booze

TSU police officer and former Vanderbilt running back Brian Kimbrow is charged with reckless endangerment after his gun went off.

NASHVILLE, TN — A Tennessee State University police officer and former Vanderbilt University running back says his dog caused him to accidentally fire his gun inside his apartment, but investigators think it was maybe the booze's fault.

Both TSU and Metro Police responded to a shots-fired call at the apartment of Brian Kimbrow shortly after 3 a.m. Thursday. Kimbrow, a member of TSU's campus police, said he was cleaning his service pistol while facing the bed where his girlfriend was sleeping when his dog jumped on him and the gun "went off," according to an arrest report.

Officers said he smelled of alcohol, his eyes were red and watery and his speech was slurred when they spoke with him. The gun was under a pillow on the couch in the living room when police arrived.

TSU placed Kimbrow on administrative leave. Kimbrow was a four-star recruit for the Commodores football team, playing on West End under former coach James Franklin in 2012 and 2013. The Memphis prep standout was dismissed from the team by coach Derek Mason in 2014 and briefly tried to catch on at Middle Tennessee State as a graduate transfer, but left the team for "personal reasons" in 2016.
