Despite a turnout at the pop-up sites that was "a little disappointing," according to Riley, there were 12,584 vaccine doses administered in Montgomery County during the week of Aug. 9-15, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. It's the fourth straight week that saw an increase of doses administered in the county.
"We have plenty of providers stretched out across the county that are able to do them, ... so they are getting done," said Jason Millsaps, executive director of the Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management. "In a couple weeks, we'll be doing second doses on all these folks, and if these trends continue, there will be double that."
The county's ramped-up vaccination efforts are in response to the latest wave of the pandemic, a surge caused by the delta variant.
The Montgomery County Public Health District reported 9,073 active cases in its Friday update, an increase of 151 since Wednesday. In the county, 384 are hospitalized with COVID-19 with 85 in intensive care. Both metrics are pandemic-highs for Montgomery County.
MCPHD also reported that 686 Montgomery County children under the age of 12 have tested positive for COVID-19 in August, the most in any month of the pandemic so far.
