CONROE, TX — A local neighborhood watch group is being credited with helping police locate and remove credit card skimmers at a Conroe gas station. The group called investigators with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office on April 25 to report the possible use of credit card skimmers on several of the gas pumps.

Deputies met with technicians the following day at the Chevron station, located at 16400 block of State Highway 105 East to inspect the pumps.

During the investigation, the technicians located and removed two credit card skimming devices. Investigators are working to determine who planted the devices.

“This is another example of what can be accomplished when the public and law enforcement work together to police their community. Without the actions of these alert citizens, these skimmers could have gone unnoticed and led to more citizens being victimized.” Sheriff Rand Henderson said in a statement.

Credit card skimming devices are becoming more prevalent and are often installed inside the fuel pumps to collect the credit/debit card information when customers use the card.

The criminals then return later to download the information and use the data to create fake credit cards or make online purchases.

Montgomery County Sheriff Rand Henderson reminds everyone to diligently monitor their credit card and banking transactions after they use a pay at the pump service.

If your card information has been compromised, contact your banking institution immediately and cancel your card. You can then contact Law Enforcement for a police report.
