Lake Creek Baseball Trio, Porter's Westenburg Named All-State

Lake Creek's Spikerman, Neely and Lyness joined the Spartans' senior outfielder as honorable mentions on the TSWA 5A All-State Team.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — Four Montgomery County baseball players earned honorable mention on the Texas Sports Writers Association Class 5A All-State Baseball Team over the weekend.

Lake Creek had a trio of players make the team in seniors John Spikerman and Jagger Neely and junior Jaron Lyness. Porter senior outfielder Connor Westenburg also earned honorable mention recognition.

Spikerman, Neely and Lyness helped the Lions claim a District 20-5A co-championship and the district's top seed with a tiebreaker win over Kingwood Park. Lake Creek beat A&M Consolidated, Austin McCallum and rival Montgomery in the playoffs to reach the regional semifinals before falling to eventual state champion Barbers Hill. The Lions finished the season 25-13-1.

Spikerman provided stellar defense at shortstop with a 1.000 fielding percentage, and was a monster at the plate to earn 20-5A MVP honors and third-team all-state recognition from the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Association. The University of Oklahoma signee hit .517 with a .600 on-base percentage and .783 slugging percentage, and he notched six doubles, two triples and two home runs. He scored 28 runs, batted in 24 and swiped eight bases.

Neely earned honorable mention at third base after a campaign in which he slashed .354/.443/.434 with five doubles and two triples. He had 31 RBI, 27 runs and six stolen bases to go along with a .921 fielding percentage at the hot corner. Neely also was named second-team all state by THSBCA.

Lyness, who played second base, hit .371 with a .529 OBP and .457 slugging percentage and scored 37 runs. He drew 29 walks and added five doubles, two triples, 12 RBI and eight stolen bases to go with a .961 fielding percentage.

Westenburg helped Porter beat Brenham and Pflugerville Hendrickson to reach the regional quarterfinals, where the Spartans lost to College Station, and finish 24-11.

The McNeese State signee was named 20-5A defensive MVP for his outstanding play in center field, where he had a .988 fielding percentage. He also hit .311 and had eye-popping numbers on the base paths, scoring 52 runs and stealing 45 bases. Westenburg had a .490 OBP with a .500 slugging percentage and notched eight doubles, three triples and two homers.
