Investigators said the man had apparently failed to shift the car into park before going to get his scooter.
Lake Division deputies said this is hardly an isolated incident and that it is common for boaters to make the same mistake.
Deputies said boaters often fail put their vehicles in park when launching or retrieving their boats, and remind motorists and boaters to make sure their vehicles are securely in park when they are not driving.
