MONTGOMERY COUNTY, TX — Texas high school football kicked off last weekend to a lot of success and fanfare for Montgomery County teams.

Here are some of the best player performances from Week 1.

Offensive Performance of the Week

Derek Lagway, Willis’ sophomore quarterback, had a stellar season debut for the Wildkats, rushing for 227 yards and three touchdowns on just 16 carries in a hard-fought 40-27 loss to Tomball. Lagway added 41 yards and a touchdown on 6-of-11 passing.

Defensive Performance of the Week

Caney Creek senior defensive back Cooper Mullin made big plays all game in a 25-7 win over Pasadena. Mullin had two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and five sacks to lead the Panthers’ defense.

Special Teams Performance of the Week

Lake Creek sophomore receiver Sam Lee burst onto the scene with two special teams touchdowns and 225 all-purpose yards in the Lions’ 58-34 win over Dayton. He returned a punt for a 72-yard touchdown, had two kickoff returns for 76 yards and another score and caught two passes for 69 yards, including a 49-yarder.

  • RB Justin Freeney, Lake Creek, sr. — 25 carries, 237 yards, 2 TDs in 58-34 win over Dayton.
  • LB Roman Hamilton, Conroe, sr. — 12 tackles, 8 solo, 2 TFLs, sack, INT in 34-7 win over Mayde Creek.
  • RB Zane Obregon, Splendora, sr. — 34 carries, 201 yards, 3 TDs in 26-7 win over North Forest.
  • RB Kedrick Reescano, New Caney, jr. — 28 carries, 179 yards, 3 TDs in 23-7 win over Marshall.
