CONROE, TX — A 36-year-old Willis man with a lengthy criminal past was sentenced to 50 years in state prison. Jeffrey Oliveras was convicted July 10 of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon- family violence for stabbing Krista Alvarez in November 2018.

Police were called to the couple's home at 106 South Shirley Lane at about 5:15 p.m. on Nov. 5, 2018 for an assault. When police arrived, they found Alvarez suffering from a stab wound in her back. Family members told officers that Oliveras was trying to flee through a back door.

Police detained Oliveras, who told officers that he stabbed Alvarez in self defense after she hit him in the head with a cell phone.

According to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office, Alvarez , who was treated for the stab wound, a collapsed lung, a fractured rib, and other serious injuries, pleaded with police not to arrest Oliveras and claimed the incident was a misunderstanding.

During the trial, Alvarez initially testified that Oliveras stabbed her in self defense, as he claimed. However, prosecutors discovered recorded phone conversations indicating that Oliveras coerced and manipulated Alvarez and her son to change their testimony in his favor.

The jury took two hours to convict Oliveras. Prosecutors presented evidence at sentencing of Oliveras' violent criminal past and ties to criminal gangs, which led to a sentence of 50 years.

"Unfortunately we often see batterers continue to manipulate and control victims and families in domestic violence cases, even when the acts are extremely violent," said Prosecutor Echo Hutson. "These jurors sent a strong message to batterers in Montgomery County...their verdict protected this family and the community from a dangerous and violent offender."
