Here are the top three stories today in Corpus Christi:
- Demolition is set to begin soon on the future Homewood Suites 126-room hotel in downtown Corpus Christi. Once completed, the hotel will feature a rooftop bar and Topgolf Swing Suites, among other amenities. Demolition is scheduled to take roughly two months, with hotel construction set to begin shortly after. (KRIS 6 News Corpus Christi)
- After Dist. 34 Representative Abel Herrero's announcement that he will not seek re-election at the end of his term, several potential candidates have been identified. Those considering running include former Dist. 34 Representative Hugo Berlanga, former Nueces County Judge Barbara Canales, and Former State Representative Solomon Ortiz Jr. Corpus Christi Dist. 3 Councilman Roland Barrera is already a confirmed candidate. - Texas A&M Corpus-Christi transfer Terrion Murdix has been receiving some attention this week after entering the transfer portal. Teams including Ole Miss, Charleston, Iona, Utah, Southern Illinois, and Pittsburgh, among others, reached out to the Corpus-Christi player. The rising senior is currently injured but plans to return to the court with a new team around December next season. This past season, Murdix helped bring Texas A&M Corpus-Christi to the NCAA Tournament for the third time ever. (Bustling Brackets)

- The Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department will host rubber duck races this upcoming Saturday, Jul. 15 from 1:00-2:00 p.m. During the event at Greenwood Pool, lifeguards will release numbered ducks down water slides — whoever's duck goes the furthest will win a prize. - In case you missed it, the City of Corpus Christi Development Services Department has canceled its community input sessions on proposed master plans for roadways, water, wastewater, and stormwater. - This week, Corpus Christi is facing more high temperatures and humidity. Due to the weather, the City of Corpus Christi will open several local cooling shelters for the public.
