🌱 Free After-School Program + Rep. Herrero Won't Seek Re-Election

Here are the top three stories today in Corpus Christi:
- The Corpus Christi Independent School District recently opened applications for a free after-school program. The program is open to students in kindergarten through fifth grade at a total of 19 different eligible schools. You can register for the after-school program online here. (KIIITV.com)
- According to a recent news release, House District 34 Texas State Rep. Abel Herrero will not seek re-election for a 10th term. Herrero served as representative from 2005-2011, then again from 2013-now for the district that covers part of Corpus Christi and other cities or Census Designated Places to the west. (Texas Tribune)
- The City of Corpus Christi's Municipal Court will host its annual Youth Traffic Safety and Risk Prevention Event on Saturday, Jul. 15. During the free event from 12:00-4:00 p.m. at the American Bank Center, attendees will learn about the dangers of drunk driving. The first 200 event attendees will also receive a clear backpack, which will be required of students in pre-K through 12th grade starting in the 2023-24 school year. - Looking for a way to keep the kids occupied this month? The Corpus Christi Parks and Recreation Department is offering weekly youth sports camps though Thursday, Jul. 27 for $70 per child.
