📰 News we're reading

1. Here's why Corpus Christi ISD might keep uncertified teachers (caller.com subscription) — Corpus Christi ISD plans to keep using partially uncertified “associate teachers” in core subjects through the 2028–29 school year by seeking a state-approved delay of new certification rules. District leaders say the move protects classroom stability and gives these teachers time and financial support to complete certification, while gradually reassigning fully certified staff into matching subject areas.

2. Here's who could represent Corpus Christi as new port commissioner (caller.com subscription) — Corpus Christi’s City Council will choose a new Port of Corpus Christi commissioner on Dec. 16, filling a powerful unpaid seat that helps steer major decisions for Nueces and San Patricio counties. Eighteen applicants, including former council members, ex-port commissioners, business leaders, and a Del Mar College executive, are vying to represent the city’s interests on the seven-member board.

3. Texas map shake-up: Corpus Christi districts shift again (kristv.com) — Corpus Christi residents will see their congressional representation change in 2026, with many shifting from Michael Cloud’s district to Vicente Gonzalez’s under newly approved Texas maps. A Del Mar College political scientist explains how moving Nueces County aims to create safer Republican districts and what that could mean for voter influence and competition. Residents can already check online to see which district they’ll fall into.

4. South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind uses new technology to expand job opportunities for workers (kristv.com) — In Corpus Christi, South Texas Lighthouse for the Blind is using new assistive technology and community-backed upgrades to open more job opportunities for visually impaired residents. Workers like Tim Hatcher and Ryan Grant show how magnification devices, safer workspaces, and ongoing fundraisers are helping people build careers, support families, and stay active across the Coastal Bend.

5. Driscoll Children's Hospital and American Heart Association give 10 CPR kits to local schools (kiiitv.com) — In Corpus Christi, Driscoll Children’s Hospital and the American Heart Association have donated 10 CPR and first aid sports kits to help local schools better respond to on-field emergencies. Doctors and CCISD’s athletic director say training more students and coaches in proper CPR techniques could be lifesaving, especially when seconds matter during sudden cardiac arrest.
